The Most Common Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

The Most Common Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

Taking care of your teeth is an important part of attending to your overall health. In order for your overall health to be satisfactory, the health of your mouth must be as well. Caring for your mouth begins when you're a child and goes all the way into adulthood. While ideally, we would always like to be able to keep all our teeth, realistically that is not always possible. There are, in fact, certain situations when you might have to have a tooth extracted from your mouth. The following are some of the most common reasons why people end up having to have teeth pulled.

Misaligned Gums or Jawline

Often, younger patients might need to have their teeth pulled if they have misaligned gums or jawlines. If their jawlines and/or gums aren't correctly aligned, then the teeth that they do have could hamper proper growth and may need to be pulled so that the child can wear the appropriate headgear and orthodontic appliances like braces to correct the issue while development is still in progress.

Too Many Teeth

Another issue common among the younger sector is having too many teeth. It's not uncommon at all for a child to have too many teeth come in at once. However, to avoid having to deal with overcrowding that could cause your teeth to get pushed outward and look crooked, it's best to pull the offending extra tooth or teeth.

Wisdom Teeth

As pre-adolescents move into their teenage and young adult years, they might find themselves having to have their teeth pulled if they get wisdom teeth. Not everybody grows wisdom teeth, and not everybody has to have their wisdom teeth removed. However, if teens have wisdom teeth that prove extremely painful, get cavities in them, or are overcrowding their mouths and causing problems in general, then it might be best for them to have the extraneous teeth pulled.

Cavities

Throughout adulthood, a common reason to have to have a tooth pulled is due to cavities and tooth decay. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot save a tooth. If you have a cavity, you can have it removed and a filling placed within the offending tooth. However, if the filling keeps falling out or if the tooth begins to rot and decay around it, then you might just need to have it extracted.

Broken Teeth

In the event that you get into a car accident, sporting accident or any other circumstance that causes one of your teeth to break off, then the tooth might not be salvageable. In some instances, dentists can affix the broken part of the tooth back onto the root, but more often than not, it's recommended to have the tooth extracted. If the missing tooth is in a location near the front of the mouth, then you can always get a partial plate or implant to replace the appearance of the missing tooth.

Periodontal Disease

As you age and get older, it becomes more and more difficult to fight against periodontal disease. Numerous factors affect your likelihood of developing periodontal disease, and the state of your overall physical health can affect it. For instance, patients with diabetes might be more prone to developing periodontal disease than those without the disease, and so on. In cases where some of your teeth begin to decay past the point of no return, a tooth extraction periodontist can remove them for you. Then, periodontists can also help you prevent from having to have more teeth extractions with their specialized knowledge of periodontal disease prevention.

While we all want to have a naturally beautiful smile, that isn't always possible. Time has a way of making it so that we lose some of our teeth, but thanks to modern technology and all the innovations in the dentistry field, you can still have the beautiful smile that you want regardless of your age or dental situation.
